In 2015 Kawerau National Woodskills Competition celebrated 25 years of bringing New Zealand woodcrafters the opportunity to show case their work in our stunning little town.

Kawerau National Woodskills is the brainchild of Tony Geor who saw an opening in little old New Zealand for a high caliber competition that promoted the use of wood, the basis of our little township.

Kawerau is situated in the Eastern Bay Of Plenty, a proud community with a strong forestry, milling influence, the wood craft center of New Zealand, which is why Kawerau National Woodskills has been such a huge success over the years bringing over 5 thousand visitors to the area over the three day exhibit.

In 1991, the first exhibition was held in the forestry headquarters/old fire brigade building for local woodcrafters and was such a huge success the competition was opened up the following year to the whole of New Zealand becoming a National competition.

Kawerau Enterprise Agency KEA was the main sponsor and support network for Kawerau National Woodskills in the early years of the competition with the Mill Tasman Pulp and Paper contributing as the competition gathered momentum. Kawerau National Woodskills has had a great team of trustees and organizing committee who's drive and passion has seen the competition become a much anticipated event for not just our community but for woodcrafters young and old.

The knowledge and support from Tony Geor, Doug Logan, Alistar Holmes (Deputy Mayor), Lily Stubbs, and Pam Jackson has enabled the competition to be what it is today, along with the introduction of a design team in the early stages meant the competition was given a professional edge and those early designers Ann Clarke and Kim Moncur set a precedence for future years.  Kawerau National Woodskills today has a great community support network, a confident, enthusiastic committee, design team and volunteer base who strive towards making this event a must see year after year.
